“Don’t Touch My Hair” : A Kansas City Cultural-Art Exhibit

Updated: 21 hours ago

Jersey City, New Jersey native Daisha Maria-Breona has been making tremendous waves in the Kansas City, MO art scene!

She has rightfully been coined the “Woman of Audacity” by Tyler Schneider a writer for Kansas City’s news source The Pitch.

Finding ways to convey her personal experiences through her art has not only been life changing and inspiring to those viewing her work, but incredibly therapeutic to her as well.

Throughout her bodies of gallery work, as well as commissioned work, you will find a running theme of strong intentional portraits, Black trailblazers, and many cultural references.

The same spirit lives in her upcoming exhibit “Don’t Touch My Hair”.

The night will start with the art pieces on display, followed by spoken word performances, and a chance for attendees to settle into their own creativity through a guided sip and paint session.

I asked Daisha a few questions regarding the importance of this event to her:

J: You have a new exhibit that you are preparing for called "Don’t Touch My Hair". What was the inspiration behind the sentiment?

D:

J : How did you select the artists in your exhibit?

D:

J: What has your journey been like with your own hair? Being a natural girly comes with a lot from finding the right products, care routine, confidence in rocking our own crowns. How has being a natural girly impacted you?

D:

J: You have an office/ corporate background as well, so I have to ask - have you experienced any issues in those spaces wearing your natural hair?

D:

I will be following up on this topic of internalized prejudice and family based colorism in a more extensive blog post because I feel it deserved its own attention!
