Last night, the city of Atlanta showed up and showed out for the premiere of G20 at Regal Cinemas in Atlantic Station. The star of the evening? None other than the legendary Viola Davis. Although she was not in attendance, her cast and crew was there to greet fans from across the city, for a red carpet–style experience, and the energy inside that sold-out theater was contagious.

Directed by Patricia Riggen and now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, G20 is an intense action-thriller that puts Viola Davis in the powerful role of U.S. President Danielle Sutton. Set during a high-stakes international summit in Cape Town, South Africa, the film throws viewers into chaos when terrorists seize the event—leaving President Sutton to defend herself, her daughter, and some of the world’s most influential leaders.
From my seat in that packed Atlanta theater, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and possibility. My favorite part of the film? The undeniable power and presence Viola Davis brings to the role. Her character is both fierce and fearless, navigating danger with the poise of a commander-in-chief and the grit of a soldier. She’s not just acting—she’s embodying a version of leadership that many of us wish we saw in real life.

Which raises the question: Is this movie relevant to our current administration? Some would say yes. While we haven’t seen a Black female president in the White House—yet—I believe the first one we do elect should carry herself like President Sutton. Strong, strategic, compassionate, and unapologetically bold.
The casting is strong across the board, with Marsai Martin as the tech-savvy daughter and Antony Starr as a chilling antagonist. But at its core, this movie is a showcase for Davis’ brilliance and a reminder of how powerful representation is—especially when it’s wrapped in action, emotion, and political intrigue.

G20 may be fiction, but the themes hit home. In today’s world, leadership that’s both capable and courageous feels more important than ever. And Viola Davis just gave us a blueprint for what that could look like.
If you haven’t seen G20 yet, go stream it on Amazon Prime. I will not be a A spoiler, telling too much of the film. It’s a must see, so; GO SEE it! If you were at the Atlanta premiere, you already know—it was more than just a movie night. It was an experience!
